To
kick off Women's History month,
the International Refugee Center of Oregon opens the exhibit Arts
Opening Doors: Works by Refugee and Immigrant Women Traditional
Artists in a special reception. Learn about women's
culture in places such as Afghanistan and Ukraine through traditional
arts and crafts. Given what the Taliban are doing to Afghan art
and women, this may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Onda This
month, see the outcomes of Serena Barton and Mauricio Robalino's
tantalizing titillations under the jasmine tree (any readers getting
the playful Wallace Stevens allusion in this sentence should give
themselves a snooty, erudite slap on the back). What this means
is that both artists used mixed media (primarily paint with extra
stuff stuck on) to portray the sensations of epiphany, the sudden
moments of clarity and understanding. Barton explores the lives
of four female artists from the Medieval through the Baroque periods,
using a dark, dramatic palette. Robalino keeps it festive and bright
by depicting invented deities in tropical colors. 2215 NE Alberta
St., 493-1909. Opens March 29.
Plain Jane
Stacey L. Chase captures poetic honesty in her vivid, colorful
photography. The gallery owner tells us that, in one photo, "the
suggestive droplets of water caught on an apple so tantalizingly
red, leave the audience reaching for the quenching taste of the
seemingly forbidden fruit." Damn, all in one photo. 2936
NE Alberta St., 528-9691. Opens March 29.
Shades of
Color Jerry Quenton's bold pastels depict urban themes. Bill
Rutherford's multimedia and wire works are also on display. 1476
NE Alberta St., 288-8652. Opens March 29.
