There is no downside to adult education. A class is an excellent way to meet new people, learn a new skill and exercise your body or brain. In Portland, we have a wealth of continuing-education classes from which to choose. Most of them are very reasonably priced; some courses even offer financial aid. All of the classes in this Cool School guide are open to the public, and most have no prerequisites. You can even earn college credit for some courses by paying an additional fee. The options range from cooking to dancing, from art to stand-up comedy. We've also included an "I Hate My Job" category that explores courses of study that could lead to exciting new careers. An adult-education class is a perfect opportunity to brush up on a beloved hobby, pursue a neglected dream, meet other like-minded individuals, get out of the house for a while or simply alleviate the pre-winter blues. The key to lifelong learning is having the courage to seek new adventures for your body, mind and spirit.
