Lee Kelly
Elizabeth Leach Gallery Elizabeth Leach presents Doubtful Sound 1958-2008. A retrospective of one of Portland's all-time great sculptors. 417 NW 9th Ave., 224-0521. Closes Aug. 30.
Lee Kelly
Elizabeth Leach Gallery Lee Kelly is a venerable presence in the Northwest art scene, as evidenced by the works in this show, which range from 1951 to 2008. Counterposing Kelly’s sculptures and paintings, the show makes it clear that hardly any artist finds as much commonality between the two media as Kelly. There is a strong link between the planes and forms in moody, expansive paintings such as Untitled (1961) and its partner sculpture from the same year, Untitled (Yellow). Notably, the sculptures done earlier this year, with their biomorphic contours of welded steel and white-gold leaf, may be the freest, most exuberant output in the artist’s long career. 417 NW 9th Ave., 224-0521. Closes Aug. 30.
