Buckwheat Zydeco

[ACCORDION] To be sure, it couldn't have been easy gigging accordion the early ’70s. ’Tween Dick Contino and the Decemberists’ Jenny Conlee, there was a long dry spell for squeezebox adepts, and it's easy to see why failed funk band leader Stanley Dural, um, kicked it up a notch. He's certainly brought mainstream attention to the genre and did more than his share to help New Orleans following Katrina, but really? Buckwheat Zydeco? The leading ambassador of Creole roots music—the only one, I suppose, even presuming his act to be zydeco—fashioned a title that minstrel shows and edgy sci-fi would find embarrassing? Had the Louisiana Purchase worked out differently, would Corduroy Emo be touring the big easy? JAY HORTON. Aladdin Theater 8 pm. $20. All ages.

WW PickMike Gordon

[CRAZY FRANKENSTEIN] So, here's the deal: If you got all ca-raaazy one night and went down to your sound laboratory and laughed a maniacal little laugh and went about making a musical Frankenstein by combining funky jam-band riffs, Caribbean-style syncopation and They Might Be Giants lyrics and vocals with a twist of sass from Ben Folds, you would get Mike Gordon. And the world would rejoice. And dance around. And you would be named ruler of the Quirky Musical Kingdom. ANNIE BETHANCOURT. Aladdin Theater 8 pm. $20. All ages.
