WHO'S THAT GIRL? Holocene's Night of 1,000 Madonnas, Thursday.

Thursday, Oct. 4

(Not Much) Like a Virgin

How do you like your Material Girl? As a sweet and sassy pop tartlet, desperately seeking her "Lucky Star"? As a brunette making out with a statue in a field of burning crosses? Black-and-white, blindfolded, posing with a horse and dripping with Warren Beatty juice? As Evita? (Of course not.) Rocking to electronic beats and fencing with James Bond—or maybe wearing a Kabbalah bracelet and speaking in the fakest British accent since Kevin Costner's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves No matter how you take your menopausal maven, she'll be represented at Holocene's Night of 1,000 Madonnas, an all-night costume and dance party centered on the perennial princess. The celebration of all things vogue—and in anticipation of this month's boxed set and her yet-untitled ninth album (due in November)—is a mecca for anybody looking to join Her Madgesty's (not so) Secret Cervix. The super-queer-friendly night of thumping beats and outrageous costumes features performances by a shitload of voguers, including—appropriately enough—Old Lady Brigade, Gay Deceivers, CJ and the Dolls and Do 'N Dudes (DJ sets by Copy, Mit and DJ BJ), as well as a year's worth of flamboyant dancing, songs from the gap-toothed siren herself and an abundance of men and women dressed as Madge, striking poses. But you'd best wear eye protection—those pointy boobs can put your eye out. Holocene, 1001 SE Morrison St., 239-7639. Thursday, Oct. 4. 9 pm. $5. 21+.

Saturday, Oct. 6

Raise the Roof

Let's face it—the folks at Wieden & Kennedy know how to throw a bash. Hell, that's an understatement for a company that threw a secret party for its employees in NoPo earlier this year with the Beastie Boys serving as the house band. When PICA's involved as well, you don't have to worry about another blasé fundraiser. In fact, with the Nordstrom Runway to Rooftop party and fundraiser, the combined forces of art and advertising are looking to get you high. Literally. The rooftop fashion show will feature some cutting-edge fashionistas' work—complete with enough Blue Steel gazes and half-starved models to make Right Said Fred seem relevant again. With the combination of chic rooftop soiree, fancy snacks, beautiful people and booze, it's the perfect chance to let your inner slutty heiress out in an appropriate setting—under the stars and at the height of fashion. They say what happens at rooftop parties stays at rooftop parties. Just make sure Rick Salomon's not packing the night vision when you leave. All proceeds go to PICA. Wieden & Kennedy Building, 224 NW 13th Ave. 242-1419. Reservations required. 6:30-10 pm Saturday, Oct. 6. $100. pica.org.

Halloween Goings-on

Who You Gonna Call?

With Halloween, it's always nice to get off to an easy start as the scares, terror and sugar highs get increasingly intense. Fortunately, Portland is the kind of city that's got a nice, shady past—and a historical interest that can give you goosebumps while teaching you about the lurid and supernatural past of the City of Roses. That is to say, there's some pretty spooky shit going on around town, and no one knows this better than the folks at Portland Walking Tours, who offer a "Beyond Bizarre" spookfest. The tour includes a walk through the Shanghai Tunnels and various walking-distance locales downtown. The tour also allows you to wield an electromagnetic-field meter—the device used by "paranormal investigators" and douchebags on the SciFi Channel to detect ghostly activity. Basically, this is the closest any of us will get to becoming a Ghostbuster. Walking Tours offers two separate versions of the terrifying jaunt: an all-ages tour for some lighter scares, and a 21-and-up journey that promises a trip rife with nastiness (and booze, wonderful booze). Beyond Bizarre is guaranteed to make you look over your shoulder—there's apparently more lurking in the dark alleys of Portland than meth dealers and hookers. Tours begin at Old Town Pizza, 226 NW Davis St. Pre-registration required with Portland Walking Tours, portlandwalkingtours.com, 774-4522. All-ages tours available daily, 7 pm. $15-$19. 21+ tours Friday and Saturday, 10 pm. $29 (includes drink voucher).
