| SUPERFUND SUPER FUN: Race Against Pollution, Saturday. Image: Sierra Club |
Fri.-sat., Sept. 14-15
? 3900 Ft. Festival
?Mount Hood has gone all Saint Helens on our ass and blown up! Seriously, when was the last time Skibowl—let alone any ski park up there—made your outdoorsy indie-rock heart skip a beat? Better break out the defibrillator, because Hillstomp (one of my personal faves), the Crosswalks (like listening to a long lost album by the Minders) and the Shaky Hands are just three of the 25 stellar bands set to rock two outdoor stages. Even the event's website (theunionrecords.net) gets it right, listing a number of places to camp nearby. Multipor Lodge at Skibowl East, Mount Hood. 4-10 pm Friday, 11 am-10 pm Saturday. For directions, visit skibowl.com. $29-$39. Easy.?
Saturday Sept. 15
? Race Against Pollution
?Even if one took all the water out?of the Willamette and put it through a Brita filter, it still couldn't replace Bull Run. But it'd sure be easier to clean up. That's the idea behind the Sierra Club's Clean Willamette Campaign event—to raise awareness toward making "Willy" a less dirty word. The boatload of fun includes non-motorized boat races, tuneage by the Go Fever, free beer and free grub. Sellwood Riverfront Park, Southeast Spokane Street and Oaks Parkway. 2-5 pm. raceagainstpollution.org. Free. Easy.?
Sat.-sun., Sept. 15-16
? Rainier Mountain Festival
?You don't have to be a hardcore Mazamas member to enjoy this fest, with its 5-mile run-walk around Rainier's base camp; erect-a-tent (no joke!), sled-pull and speed-bouldering competitions; discounted gear; slideshows; and technical demonstrations—all interspersed with advice from 18 legendary climbers. Rainier Base Camp, 30027 SR 706 E, Ashford, Wash. 9 am-9 pm Saturday, 9 am-?5 pm Sunday. For directions, visit rainierfestival.com. Free. Easy.?
Sunday Sept. 16
? Bike to the Future
?Biff: "McFly! McFly! Come on, a 28-mile bicycle 'tour of sustainability' in PDX? Isn't that a bit redundant?" McFly: "Well, sure, Biff, but I thought I'd bring Lorraine on the tandem and check out the new North Portland Greenway Trail or New Columbia's affordable housing." Biff: "For $40 a pop? [taps McFly on the forehead] McFly, anybody home? You're better off riding in Kruger's Kermesse [portlandracing.com] on Saturday." McFly: "Yeah, well, I'm doing that, too. With Marty." Sunnyside Environmental School, 3421 SE Salmon St. 9 am, livabilityride.org. $40-$50. Easy-Moderate.
