Fashion Action
Showcasing equal parts fashion and function, the local fitness junkies over at Physical Element are hosting a uniquely Portland fashion show: Instead of a formulaic catwalk, there will be roving scooter gals, local dance troupes and performance artists—all decked out in style-based performance apparel—meandering, performing and posing throughout the Pearl. The first in a series of three First Thursday performances, this show will feature impromptu acts by the WhirlyGirlz Hoop Troupe for your viewing pleasure. Event begins on the corner of Northwest 9th Avenue and Davis Street. 7 pm. Free. Call 224-5425 or visit physicalelement.com for more details.Attention, Chic Petites!Summer is the time for sun, sweat and sample sales. With that in mind, Magalí Corzo is offering her runway designs to this month's First Thursday crowd at 50 percent off. And who could resist Corzo's weightless and vibrant frocks, sashay skirts and chic embellishments? Not many, but don't get too excited—sizes are limited to the 2-5 range. So for those of you who like to engage in that thing called "eating," you might have to forfeit this one—and go out to lunch instead. Magalí Corzo, 1720 NW Lovejoy St., Suite 106. 3-8 pm. For more info, visit magalicorzo.com.
Comic Correspondence
Having catalogued a rather serious subject for his newest collection of comic works, Ryan Alexander-Tanner (known for chronicling quirky locals—remember the cook from Joe's Cellar?—in his "PDX Exposed!" WW comic panels) brings "The Prisoner" to the Sequential Art Gallery & Studio. Inspired by an exchange of letters with a convicted criminal over the span of five months, Alexander-Tanner lends new meaning to first impressions and the dual elements of fantasy and fiction in comics. Plus, his entire series of "PDX Exposed!" will premiere alongside "The Prisoner." Not to be missed, people. Sequential Art Gallery & Studio, 328 NW Broadway, Unit 113, 916-9293. 6-10 pm. Show runs through July. Also see Culture Feature, page 27.
Friday-Sunday July 7-9

Ahoy, Ferret Lovers!
In honor of ferrets and their piratey, pillaging and treasure-stashing ways, the Oregon Humane Society is hosting a fundraiser for Cascade Ferret Network's Ferret Awareness Day. The event features a ferret playpen, discount exams, a ferret-related raffle, a pirate-themed photo op for ferrets and their owners—how can you pass that up?!—and, of course, a treasure hunt. As the event's organizers say, "Yo ho, yo ho, a ferret's life for me!" Oregon Humane Society, 1067 NE Columbia Blvd., 285-7722. 1-5 pm. Free.

Killer Cuts
Behold the coolest way to get a kick-ass new 'do (cut or color) while also supporting local visual and performing arts: Portland's original rock 'n' roll barbershop, Bishops, and inner-eastside raw warehouse cum interdisciplinary art center, Disjecta, have joined forces in the name of good hair and art. All grooming proceeds exceeding Bishops' average sales will benefit Disjecta. Plus, if all the high-chairs are taken, rain checks will be provided. Sweet. Bishops, 326 NW 21st Ave., 274-4100, 210 NE 28th Ave., 235-2770, 3742 SE Hawthorne Blvd., 238-9600, 1031 SW Columbia St., 222-1323, 2132 NE Alberta St., 546-4171.
